3 Ways to Prepare for Your First Ghostwriting Session

filed in ghostwriting - jan 2026

If you've never worked with a ghostwriter before, the idea of sitting down for an interview about yourself can feel a little strange.
What do you say? How much do you share? What if you blank on something important?

You don't need to prepare a speech. Truly! In fact, please don't. It'll disrupt our flow. Sometimes, our real beliefs and best stories are the ones hiding underneath our first impulses and thoughts. So don't put pressure on yourself to think through everything before we meet.

For my type-A leaders who are starting to sweat a little at this, here are 3 simple ways you can prepare ahead of our call:

1. COME WITH A FEELING, NOT A SCRIPT.

You don't need to have your story perfectly organized before we talk. In fact, it's better if you don't. What helps is having a sense of what you want people to walk away feeling after they read your words. Inspired? Trusting? Like they finally understand what you do and why it matters? Start there, and let the rest unfold in conversation.

2. THINK ABOUT THE MOMENTS, NOT JUST THE MILESTONES

The most compelling stories rarely live in the highlight reel. They live in the specific, ordinary moments that shaped how you think and why you do what you do. Before our session, think less about your resume and more about the experiences that changed you. Those are the ones worth telling.

3. TRUST THE SILENCE.

Good interviews have pauses. If I ask you something and you need a moment to think, take it. The first answer that comes out is rarely the most true one. What comes after the quiet — that's usually where the real story is. You don't need to fill every gap. I've got you.

And if you have any burning questions, ideas, or concerns before our time together, please, send those my way! I'm always receptive to hearing your inclinations, and want to know how I can make our time together as productive as possible!
